symbolic annihilation

noun

  1. The annihilation, absence or active un-representation of a cultural group, i.e. decimating a culture by disallowing the symbolic representation of that group or misrepresenting that culture within the mainstream media or consciousness.

The symbolic annihilation of women throughout history has made it difficult for females to break out from the accepted narratives of ingenue or whore.

Symbolic annihilation is a problem for both gender and race that validates why cultural studies are so important.
